Grave marker for George J. Munno in Section 2T, Site
1696, Long Island National Cemetery, East Farmingdale (Suffolk county),
New York.
George enlisted in the Army at Fort
Jay, Governor's Island, NY on 10 September 1942 and was assigned to
Company B, 508th PIR.
On 1 November 1943 Pvt Munno was again
at Fort Jay but this time he was in confinement for being AWOL.
He was returned to Xamp0 Mackall and
placed into cobfine4 but was permitted to return to duty on 30 November.
He apparently was transferred out of
the 508th in December but the morning reports for that month are all
illegible.
According to his grave marker he ended
up in the 506th PIR and attained the rank of Corporal and had been
awarded the Bronze Star Medal. since the automatic award of that
medal for men holding the CIB was not enacted until some 6 years after
his death it ,must be assumed that he received it as a direst award. |
