John enlisted in the Army at Los Angeles, CA on 20 October 1942.

Pvt Munson was assigned to Hq 2nd although the exact date is unknown as the Morning Reports for October 1942 re unavailable.

Pfc Munson was wounded in action in France on 14 June 1944 and was able to return to duty on 21 June.

On 4 January 1945 Pfc Munson was evacuated to a field hospital.  Classed as a non-battle casualty, he may have been the victim of frostbite although he returnee to duty on 18 January.

But on 1 February he was again evacuated non-battle casualty.  On 14 March 19454 he was transferred from the 186th (US) General Hospital to the Parachute Reinforcement Regiment at the Parachute School, Fort Benning, GA, probably for specialized treatment at the post hospital.

His military decorations include the Purple Heart and the Bronze Service Arrowhead device awarded for participation in Normandy assault
