Nance Commissioned
Paul Marion Nance, of Anderson,
S. C, a brother of Mrs. F. P Jacobs of 382 South University avenue,
was recently commissioned a second lieutenant at the infantry school,
Fort Benning. Ga.; Before going to officers candidate school four months ago
he was employed by Columbia Steel company at Geneva.

Silver Star Medal
First Lt Paul Marion Nance whose sister is
Mrs. Fred P Jacobs, 211 E South Temple, has received the silver star medal for action in Belgium in December.
The citation states that he attacked a house blocking an advance
and was wounded while rushing the house. Although wounded he continued and killed three enemy soldiers, wounded two others and caused three more to retreat
He was wounded twice more but evacuated a wounded companion and refused to be evacuated himself until so ordered.
Lt Nance went overseas In June 1944 and now is in Berlin with the 82nd airborne division

Paul registered for the draft in Provo, Utah on 20
July 1943.
He graduated from Clemson A&M College,, SC*
with a Bachelor of Science degree in [June?] 1943.
He was inducted into the Army as a Private on 4
August 1943.
Pvt Nance was discharged to accept a commission on 27
December 1943 and commissioned as a 2nd Lt. the following day.
On 29 September 1944 1st Lt Nance was transferred to
Service Company, 508th PIR.
He was subsequently reassigned to the 504th PIR on 15
October 1944.
The regiment gave up a good man as the Lieutenant
displayed great valor in combat and was awarded a Silver Star for
action in Belgium just two months later. |
