Carl registered for draft at Big Sandy, (McDowell county), WV on 16 Octobers, 1940 and was inducted in to the army at Huntington. WV on 6 January 1944.

On 29 September 1944, Pvt Newbery was transferred from 82nd Airborne Division Hq to Service Company, 508th PIR. On 21 November 1944 he was reassigned to Hq 2nd, 508th.

He was promoted to Pfc on 25 January 1945.

On 2 April 1945, Pfc Newberry was transferred to 82nd Airborne Division and was discharged on 4 January 1946.

He married Ruby H Crouse in San Francisco, CA on 15 March 1950.
