JAMES M. NEWELL

Grave marker for James M. Newell in  the Blythefield Memorial Gardens, Rockford (Kent county), Michigan.

James enlisted in the Army at Kalamazoo, MI on 17 April 1943.  after completion of basic training and jump school Pvt Newell was transferred from the Parachute School, Hq Ft Benning, GA to Company A, 508th which was then in it final training at Camp Mackall, NC.

Pvt Newell was listed as seriously injured in action on 7 June 1944 following the jump into Normandy.  He was evacuated to a field hospital and returned to the company five days later.

Promoted to Pfc in July, he received the Bronze Service Arrowhead device for participating in the Normandy assault,
