LEO D. NEWMAN

Grave marker for Leo D Newman in Portales Cemetery, Portales (Roosevelt county), New Mexico.

Leo registered for the draft ca 1941. although he indicated his birth place as Mule Shoe, TX he had taken residence 50 miles west in Melrose, NM.

His enlistment record held by the National Archives indicate that he enlisted in the Army at Santa Fe, NM on 6 November 1942. His discharge record states that he entered active service on 17 November at Fort Bliss, TX.

He departed the U.S. on 21 June 1944 arriving in the ETO a week later.

On 23 July 1944, Pfc Newman was transferred from 82nd Airborne Division Headquarters to Hq 2nd, 508th PIR.

He was discharged at Fort Bragg, NC on 8 December 1946.

His military decorations include the European-African-Middle Eastern Eastern Service medal with four bronze stars and the Bronze Service Arrowhead device.
