Grave marker for Millard A. Newman in Woodlawn
Memorial Cemetery, Clio (Genesee county), Michigan.
Millard enlisted in the Army on 11 June 1942.
Pvt Newman was transferred to the Medical detachment, 508th from
Field Force Replacement Depot No. 8 on 1 May 1944.
Appointed as Pfc on 27 June 1944, he sewed on still
another stripe when he was appointed as Corporal less than a month
later.
On 24 January 1945 Cpl Newman was listed as seriously
wounded in action.
On March 17 1945 he was awarded the Silver Star for
his heroic action of smothering a hand grenade with his body in a
battalion aid station thereby protecting the lives of three litter
patients in the aid station.
His military decorations also included the Bronze
Star Medal and the Purple Heart with one Oak Leaf Cluster. |
