WILLIAM H. NOLTE

Nolte Honored

   Sgt. Maj. William H. Nolte received the First Oak Leaf Cluster to the Army Commendation Medal, at a ceremony here May 26 honoring his retirement after 21 years service in the Army.
   Col/ Maron A. Happ, commanding officer of Fort McClellan, presented the medal to Sergeant Major Nolte, who was sergeant major of the Third U.S. Army Noncommissioned Officer [NCO]  Academy prior to his retirement.
   He is married to the former Vera Lee Greenway of Prospect, Tenn.  They have two sons, William 7 and Mark, 6.
     Sergeant Major Nolte entered the Army in 1946.  In 1948 he became the youngest platoon sergeant in the First infaItry Division, then stationed in Germany.  Returning to0 the states in 1951, he served with the 508th Airborne Infantry Regiment at Fort Benning, Ga., until 1952 when he became the 20th man accepted for the Special Forces.
  He swerved 13 years overseas with the Special Force, including a tour as sergeant major of the 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnam's III Corps area from 1964 to 1965.
   During his overseas tour he served consecutively in Germany, Japan, Korea and the Philippines from 1953 to 1959.  In 1959 he returned to Germany and then served in Greece, France, Italy and Vietnam.
   Sergeant Major Nolte met and married his wife in Okinawa in 1958, while she was a member of the Women's Army Corps working in Military Personnel for the 1st Special Forces.
   Following his tour in Vietnam, he served six months as sergeant major of the Student Brigade, U.S. Army Infantry School, Fort Benning.  in 1966, he moved to Fort McClellan as Sergeant major of the Drill Sergeant School, which was reorganized as the Third Army NCO Academy in January of this year.
   In addition to two awards of the army Commendation Medal, sergeant Major Nolte has received the Air Medal, Good Conduct Medal (five awards), World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, U.S. Master Parachutist Badge, Vietnam Parachutist Badge, Greek and Philippine Parachute Badges.
