SFC
Stanley A. Nordwall flew from Frankfurt to New York City on 2
October 1955 aboard Seaboard & Western Airlines' Flight 950.
He was accompanied by his wife Helen (33) and children Sandra (4)
and Antonne (2)
What unit he had been assigned to at the time is unknown but this
contract carrier fight seems to have had only military personnel and
dependents on board.
That fact is not surprising as the airline catered to military
contracts. Started by two brothers who had been officers
during the war. The airline launched service in 1946 with an
Army surplus C-54 [converted to the civilian DC-4
NC91085 "Dutch Trader", shown at left].
By
the time Stanley's flight took place the airline had transitioned to
the new long-range Lockheed L-1049D Super Constellations such as the
N1008C shown here on the ramp at Idlewild (now JFK).
NOTE: Seaboard had a remarkable safety record: 33 years
flying all over the globe, often with minimal support, without a
single fatal accident. On October 1, 1980 Seaboard World
Airlines was absorbed by The Flying Tiger Line, which in turn was
absorbed by FedEx Corp eight years later. |
