(courtesy of James Endres)

Grave marker for Duane V. Nyberg in Lot 534 grave 007 of the Riverside Cemetery, Monticello (Wright county), Minnesota.

Duane enlisted in the Army on 11 May 1943.  Pvt Nyberg was transferred from the 11th Replacement Depot to the Medical Detachment, 508th PIR on 28 August 1944.

On 26 December 1944 Pfc Nyberg was hospitalized as a "non-battle" casualty, possibly due to frostbite, and was subsequently relieved from the 508th.

On 26 March 1945 Pfc Nyberg was transferred to an unknown hospital, probably somewhere in the UK.

It was not until 29 June 1945 that Pfc Nyberg arrived in New York City aboard the Queen Mary.

His name is listed among others in Shipment Number 10248F, Group 16 all having hometowns in the north central states of Minnesota and North Dakota. His condition required further hospitalization before he was released from duty on 21 November 1945.

Pfc Nyberg's military decorations include the Bronze Service Arrowhead awarded for the Holland campaign and Airborne operations.
