RUSSELL J. PALMERTON

Grave marker for Russell J. Palmerton the Good Shepherd section, Centuries Memorial Park, Shreveport (Caddo Parish), Louisiana.

Russell first enlisted in he Army on 17 August 1936 and had at least two additional enlistments on 7 December 1940 and 23 July 1942.  He was discharged on 7 March 1943 to accept a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant.

On 28 August 1944, Lt Palmerton was transferred from 82d Airborne Division. Leicester, England to Company E, 508th PIR with the principal duty of assistant platoon leader.

On 21 January 1945, Lt. Palmerton was wounded in action in Belgium.  He returned to duty on 2 February.

He was transferred to the 13th Airborne Division on 28 May 1945.

On 20 August 1945, 2nd Lt. Palmerton was listed with the 517th PIR aboard the USAT Madawaska Victory when it docked in New York City Harbor after departing from Le Havre, France.

Russell apparently chose to remain in service and was reclassified as a warrant officer attaining the grade of CWO on 1 November 1945.
