Karl married Trula B. Stinglay on 8 November 1971.  It was the second marriage for her as well.

Karl enlisted at in the Army at Fort Benjamin Harrison, IN on 26 June 1944 and volunteered for parachutist duty.

His arrival in the 508th PIR is unrecorded but he was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on 17 July 1945 while a member of the regiment.
