Perschka In Formosa

   TAIPEI, FORMOSA (AHTNC) --- Army Staff Sergeant James W. Perschka, whose wife, Claudia, lives in Stanleytown, Va., participated in Exercise SKY SOLDIER IV in southern Formosa.  The seven-day exercise ended late in October.
   During the exercise, called TIEN PING IV in Chinese, elements of the U. S. Army's 173d Airborne Brigade and airborne units of the Army of the Republic of China parachuted into the maneuver area in order to repel a simulated aggressor force.
   Sergeant Perschka, a squad leader in Headquarters Company 1st Battalion of the brigade's 503d Infantry on Okinawa, entered the Army in June 1952 and was last stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky.
   The 28-year-old soldier, son of Mrs. Faye E. Perschka, 32 Va; Terrace, Clarksville, Tenn,. was graduated from Mercer (Pa.) High School in 1952.

The other soldiers (from left) are Sergeant First Class Bernard J. Townsend; First Sergeant Robert J. Varner, Sgt. Bertrand, Sergeant Major Jesse E. Johnson, and Staff Sergeant James W. Perschka. The five were selected on the basis of appearance, military bearing, conduct and performance of duty.

James Walter Perschka, 67, of Milton died Saturday Oct. 4, 2002.
   Lewis Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

On 28 January 1955, SSgt Perschka was one of 62 men of the 508th ARCT who re-enlisted in order to participate in Operation Gyroscope

James was married to Sieglinde Perschka, of Aichach, West Germany but they divorced on 12 March 1993 and she returned to Germany.
