Frederick J. Prueser was
born in Hamburg, Germany on 12 December 1925.
On 18 October 1934, eight-year-old Frederick with sisters
Margot (10) and Ingrid (6) sailed from Hamburg aboard the SS Deutschland.
Incredibly, they appear to have been unaccompanied by an adult.
They are recorded as having come from the home of their paternal
grandmother, Emma Prueser, and were destined to join their father in New
York. It is believed that their mother was already at the father's
home by that time. The children disembarked in New
York City, NY on 26 October 1934.
Frederick enlisted in the Army at New York City, NY on 5
February 1944. In late 1945, Pfc Prueser was transferred to Hq
2nd, 508th PIR.
On
17 April 1945, The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Brooklyn, NY, carried
this announcement:
"ENGAGED
Miss Jeanne M. McMahon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew G. McMahon of
1815 Avenue X is the fiancée of Paratrooper Frederick J. Prueser, now
overseas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Prueser of 2711 E. 26th St."
Meanwhile, Pfc Prueser hadn't forgotten his roots as on 21 December
1945 he was sent on TDY for approximately 10 days with the 98th Group
Pioneer Corps, British Army, Purpose: Furlough to Hamburg. Per
Subject Orders Hq Command US Forces European Theatre dated 18
December 1945. Someone apparently pulled a few strings that provided
him with transport for the 500ile trek and approved furlough over the Christmas and New
Year's holidays to visit friends and relatives in his hometown.
It was not until 15 May 1946 that Pfc Prueser stepped off the gangway of
the USAT Victory in New York City but hopefully the wedding was still
on. |
