RUFUS PURDUE

WASHINGTON -- Rufus "Jack" Purdue, 81, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003, at Daviess Community Hospital.

He was a retired electrician and was an Army veteran.

Surviving are two sisters, Josephine Gates and Maude Belle Fiscus; a half sister, Phyllis Brock; and a half brother, Bert Purdue.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. EST Friday at Gill Funeral Home, with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to service time.

Birth and death certificates for Rufus Perdue.

 

   Rufus registered for the draft in Washington, IN on 2 February 1942 and was inducted into the Army at Evansville, IN on 14 October 1942.
   Pvt Purdue was transferred from Fort Benjamin Harrison, IN  to Company D, 508th PIR. on 9 November 1942.
He was appointed to Pfc in Company Order No 9 on 30 June 1943.
   Pfc Purdue was initially listed as Missing In Action on 6 June 1944 but his status was revised to wounded in action as of 27 June 1944.  He returned to the company on 14 August 1944.
   Apparently not yet fit for combat duty he was transferred to Service Company on 11 September 1944 and thus missed the Holland jump.
   Pfc Purdue did make the mobilization for the Battle of The Bulge and was wounded a second time on 1 January 1945.  He returned to duty on 4 March 1945 and was transferred to the 101st Airborne Division on 29 May 1945.
   His military awards include the Purple Heart with 1 Oak :Leaf Cluster and the Bronze Service Arrowhead Device awarded for participation in Normandy assault
