Hugh enlisted in the Army at Oklahoma City, OK on 1 December 1942 and was assigned to Company G, 508th.  Thirteen months later he was appointed to Private First Class.  When he made the jump into Normandy on D-Day, 6 June 1944 he wore the stripes of a Corporal and was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge for action during that campaign.  He also earned the Purple Heart when he was wounded in France on 18 June 44.

That wound may have kept him out of action long enough to have missed the jump into Holland in September 1944 but her was back to duty in December when the unit was sent into combat in Belgium for the Battle of The Bulge.  By then a Sergeant, he was wounded twice more in Belgium in January and February, 1945,  He was awarded two Oak Leaf clusters to the Purple Heart as a consequence.

Sgt Queen also received the Silver Star but the date and citation for the award have not yet been located.
