JOHN G. ROONEY

Grave marker for John G. Rooney in Section 30, Grave 1079-B, Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington (Arlington county), Virginia.

John enlisted in the Army at Providence, RI on 29 November 1942.

On 19 December 1942, Pvt Rooney was transferred from Camp Toccoa, GA to Company I, 508th PIR.

On 20 June 1944, Sgt Rooney was seriously wounded in action and was evacuated to a field hospital.  On 27 September 1944 he was transferred to the hospitals Detachment of Patients.

Although the facts related to his wounding are unknown, it is known that he was later awarded the Silver Star and that he lost the lower portion of his left leg as a consequence.

Bob Chisolm confirmed the amputation saying, "Jack Rooney lost his foot and part of his lower leg in Normandy. He could do any dance step but was really something to watch when he was “Jitterbugging”
