ROBERT J. SALTER

Grave markers for Robert J. Salter in Saint Mary's Cemetery, Saint Marys (Elk county), Pennsylvania.

Robert enlisted in the Army at Erie, PA on 5 January 1943 ad was assigned to Service Company, 508th PIR.

On 16 July 1944, Pvt Salter was transferred to Company D.  On 20 January 1945 he was promoted to Pfc.

Pfc Salter was seriously wounded in action on 11 February 1945 and evacuated to a field hospital.  On 14 May 1945, Pfc Salter was transferred to the hospital's Detachment of Patients and did not return to the regiment.

His military decorations include the Purple Heart and the Bronze Service Arrowhead device awarded for the Holland campaign and Airborne operations.

 

On 18 January 1950, Robert completed this application for the Pennsylvania WWII Veterans bonus.  He was credited with 17 months of domestic duty as well as 17 months of foreign service and was awarded a $425 bonus.

Note at the bottom of page 1 he indicated he had been discharged at the McGuire General Hospital, Richmond, VA on 20 October 1945
