LAWRENCE F. SALVA


VERO BEACH - Lawrence "Larry" F. Salva, 86, of Vero Beach [FL] died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, at his home.

A native of Indiana County, Pa., he lived in Vero Beach for 43 years. He moved here from Peabody, Mass.

Before retirement, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service, Vero Beach for 22 years.

He served as an Army paratrooper, 82nd Airborne Division, during World War II. He received a Silver Star, Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts.

He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church.

He was a member of Indian River Orchid Society; Disabled American Veterans, Vero Beach; Military Order of the Purple Heart; Battle of Normandy Foundation; and the Knights of Columbus, 3rd Degree, Vero Beach.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Stella; a daughter, Carol Salva Jones of Glen Mills, Pa.; a brother, Tom Salva of Kent, Pa.; a sister, Elizabeth Kennesky of Vero Beach; and three grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 14, at Holy Cross Catholic Church.

Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Fort Pierce. Military honors will be conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3918.

Grave marker for Lawrence P. Salva and spouse in the Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Fort Pierce (St. Lucie county), Florida,

Lawrence enlisted in the Army on 26 February 1942 and was assigned to Hq 2nd, 508th.  He was later transferred to Hq 3rd.

Pvt Salva was appointed to the grade of Pfc on 16 April 1943 and then promoted to the rank of Corporal on 21 July 1944.

Cpl Salva was wounded in action on 24 September 1944 and returned to duty on 18 October 1944.

Cpl Salva was listed as having been slightly injured in action on 1 February 1945 and returned to duty on 18 February.

On 27 February 1945 Cpl Salva was engaged in a battle for which he was subsequently awarded he Silver Star.

Om 3 April 1945 he was transferred to the Military Police Platoon 82d Abn Div, perhaps to get a billet on a returning troop ship.

He was discharged on 26 September 1945 with military decorations including the Silver Star, Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster.
