WILLIAM M. SAWYER

Grave marker for William M. Sawyer in Section 69, Site: 3766 of the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington (Arlington County), Virginia.

Sawyer was born on Jan. 23, 1922 in Cabarrus, NC and enlisted in the U.S. Army on October 31, 1942 in Richmond, VA.

He volunteered for parachutist duty and was assigned to Company D, 508th PIR.

On D-Day, June 6, 1944, William jumped into Normandy and was initially reported as Missing In Action.

It was subsequently determined that he had been wounded and captured. William spent the remainder of the war interned in Stalag 4D Torgau (Elbe) Sachsen, Prussia 51-13.
