SCANLON, WILBUR J. A retired General Electric operation
manager, he died at 1:20 p.m. Friday, June 7, 1996., at his residence in
Baton Rouge. He was a native of New Orleans.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a first
sergeant and member of F Company, 508 PIR, 82nd Airborne, participated
in combat jumps in Normandy and Holland and was wounded in the Battle of
the Bulge.
Visiting was held at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East,
11000 Florida Blvd., 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Visiting at the funeral home
chapel 10 a.m. until religious services at 1 p.m. Monday, conducted by
the Rev. Keun-Soo Lee. Interment in Greenoaks Memorial Park.
Survived by wife of 49 years, 10 months, Evelyn Munn
Scanlon; four children, son and daughter-in-law, Pat and Cindy Scanlon,
daughter and son-in-law, Cathy Bond and Kenny Antee, daughter and
son-in-law, Bonnie and Donnie Moran and "adopted daughter" Libby
Hardaway; 16 grandchildren, Joy, Patrick, Corey and Amy Scanlon, John
II, PFC Clint Bond, Sunny and Megan Bond, Justin, Mandy and MarcyMoran,
Pvt. Hans Berg, Brandon Hardaway and Kyle Antee, Randy and Mikey
Scanlon; and a great-grandchild, Joshua Moran. Preceded in death by
mother and father, Edna and Llewellyn Joseph Scanlon; and a brother,
Llewellyn John Scanlon. Pallbearers will be John Bond II, PFC Clint
Bond, Patrick and Corey Scanlon, Justin Moran, Pvt. Hans Berg and
Brandon Hardaway.

Wilbur enlisted in
the Army on April 16, 1942 at Jacksonville Army Air
Field [now known as the Jacksonville Florida Municipal Airport].
As a volunteer parachutist he was sent to nearby
Camp Blanding, just west of Jacksonville. He was assigned to
the 508th PIR, Company F and remained with the unit until the war's end.
Wilbur must have been a standout trooper as he rose from
Private
to First Sergeant in 29 months of service. |
