Schattschneider in the Hillside Cemetery, Ripon (Fond du Lac), Wisconsin,
Carroll enlisted in the Army at Milwaukee,
WI on September 28, 1942 and volunteered for parachutist duty.
He was initially assigned to the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR) at
Ft. Bragg, NC and "Schattsie" became a member of the 505th's regimental
band.
In January 1943 he was transferred to the regimental band of the 508th PIR
at Camp Blanding, FL. He served with the 508th throughout the war. During
the occupation of Germany the 508th was designated as General Eisenhower's
Honor Guard and Tec/5 Schattschneider was stationed there as well. |
“…well done, good and faithful…”
Carroll John Schattschneider, age 88, of Ripon, passed away on Tuesday,
September 19, 2006 at Fountain View Care Center where he had been a patient
for one year.
Carroll was born on February 17, 1918, the son of John and Bertha (Prill)
Schattschneider. He was baptized and confirmed at Our Saviour’s United
Church of Christ of Ripon. He graduated from Ripon High School in 1937. On
May 30, 1941, he was united in marriage to Martha Kubehl at Zion Lutheran
Church in Fairwater where he was a member for 60 years, during which he
served as choir director, council member, and on the building committee.
Martha died on November 19, 2000.
With his father, Carroll worked from an early teenager until his Army
service in World War II at their Deep Rock Service Station. During the war,
from October 7, 1942 until December 12, 1945, he was a member of the 508th
Parachute Infantry Regiment, playing first trombone in the Regimental,
Parade, Concert, and Dance Band, when stationed in Alabama, England, France,
and Germany. He then entered into partnership with his father at the
Schattschneider & Son Garage.
“Schattsie” joined the Ripon Police Force on February 1, 1959 and retired on
December 31, 1979. After his retirement, as he is now remembered by many as
their “favorite bus driver” he was employed by the Ripon School District for
the Olden Road-Pickett route. For several years he managed the Milwaukee
Journal Distribution Center. He and his “carriers” won a statewide
contest-he did so enjoy and never forgot the students on his route and his
Journal “boys”.
The first Aldermanic District elected Carroll to represent them on the Ripon
City Council from 1980-1996, when home cares demanded his services.
Meanwhile, Carroll enjoyed carpentry, fishing, hunting, gardening, and his
hot house venture. The Ripon Lions’ Club honored Carroll’s 50 year charter
membership on January 28, 2006. He had served 3 terms as president and was a
most loyal supporter of Lions’ projects and activities.
On January 5, 2002, Carroll and Dorothy Boers (Laboyeske) were united in
marriage at Our Saviour’s UCC in Ripon. They lived in their Green Lake home
and were members of the Green Lake Federated Church.
Carroll was preceded in death by his parents, infant son, Edward John,
sister, Mildred Wilke, and wife, Martha. He is survived by wife, Dorothy;
daughter, Lori (James) Purath; grandchildren, Stephanie and Christopher
Purath and nephew, Douglas Toll. The family extends a special and sincere
thank you to Dr. David Brown and the staff at Fountain View Care Center for
the great compassion and excellent care awarded to Carroll throughout.
Carroll’s entire life has been one of service and a source of joy and love
to family, church, community, school, country, and all those he has
encountered. Truly-a great and good man- a sower of good deeds!
