Grave marker for John P. Schofstoll in Morrow Cemetery,
Morrow (Warren county), Ohio.
John was born in Aurora (Dearborn county),
Indiana on 8 September, 1925.
He registered for the draft on 27 April 1942 at Aurora, IN. He
was inducted into the Army at Louisville, KY on 7 January
1944.
On 3 October 1944, Pvt Schofstoll was transferred from
Hq 82nd Airborne Division to Service Company, 508th PIR.
He was later transferred to Company I on 11 December 1944
and went into action on December 18 as the regiment was moved to
Belgium for the Battle of the Bulge.
A week later, on Christmas Day, Pvt Schofstoll was
evacuated as a non-battle casualty, possibly due to frostbite. He rejoined the company on 23
January 1945 and was appointed to Pfc on the 26th of January.
Pfc Schofstoll was seriously wounded in action in Belgium
on 5 February 1945 and again evacuated.
On 10 May 1945 he was transferred to the
hospital's detachment of patients but on 9 July 19445 he returned to Company I
when he was transferred from the 2nd Replacement Depot.
Pfc Schofstoll was discharged on 31 July 1946.
However, he re-enlisted on 18 July 1947 and served until 24 Jul 1950. |
