Herbert enlisted in the Army at
Rochester, NY on 4 November 1942. He was assigned to the
Headquarters Company. 2nd Battalion, 508th.
Pvt Schultz jumped into Normandy on
D-Day, 6 June 1944 and was captured that same day.
Escapes Captors
The 24 May 1945 edition of the Rochester Democrat Chronicle reported that Herbert has escaped from the
Germans, linked up with the Czechs and then rejoined the U.S. forces
Prisoner Liberated
yet the 7 June 1945 edition of the same paper reported that Herbert
had been freed from prison camp. This roughly corresponds with the
National Archives file that shows him as liberated from Stalag 13B on 1
June 1945. |
Obituary
appeared in the Democrat Chronicle on 17 June 1973
Grave marker for Herbert C. Schultz in the VETS Section
of the Hillside Cemetery, Clarendon (Orleans county), New York.
Herbert died of a heart attack at the early age of 49. He
had been employed by Eastman Kodak in Rochester and also repaired
television sets as a side job.
