Leonard enlisted in the Army at Fort Snelling, MN on 8 December 1942 and was assigned to the 509th PIR.

On 29 February 1945 Pvt Schwartz was transferred from the 509th to Company A, 508th PIR.

His military decorations include the Bronze Service Arrowhead device for the Southern France Campaign and Airborne Operations.
