Harlan enlisted in the Army at Ft Leavenworth, Kansas on 31
December 1943. Pvt Swartzendruber was transferred
from, 82nd Airborne HQ to Company F, 508th PIR on 5 August 1944.
He was listed in Company F Morning Reports as having been
wounded in action in Holland on 1 October 1944 and was evacuated to a field
hospital.
Harlan
was returned to the United States under Evacuation Order Number 104, see
image 1 at left. His name and ASN appears on the 7th line from the
bottom on image 2.
He had been assigned to
the
Detachment of Patients in Hospital Plant Number 4149, the 188th General
Hospital in Cirencester, Gloucestershire. That installation had just
been activated in April. 1944 and consisted of a series of Nissan huts, one
of which housing the kitchen appears here. The
hospital ship was the RMS Queen Elizabeth which arrived in New York, NY on
17 September 1944. As noted in the evacuation order, patients were
transferred to a hospital after debarking in the U.S.
Pvt Swartzendruber was transferred to an unknown hospital
on 1 October and on 8 October was promoted to Corporal.
On 25 November 1944, Cpl Swartzendruber was transferred to the
Parachute Replacement Regiment, Parachute School, Fort Benning,
GA. |
