Grave marker for Charles
N. Sciandra in the Whitehaven Cemetery, Grand Island (Erie
county), New York.
Charles enlisted in the
Army at Buffalo, NY on 17 September 1942 and became a member of Company
A, 508th PIR.
Pvt Sciandra participated
in the jump into Normandy on 6 June 1944.
It was not until 29 June
1944 that the Company A Morning Report listed Pvt Sciandra as MIA as of
8 June 1944. The reason for the delay is undetermined.
As it turns out, he had
been taken prisoner on D+2, 8 June, and may have been widely separated
from his stick after landing in Normandy.
He was released from
Stalag 4D on 5 June 1945. |
