Carl Shainowski enlisted in the New York National Guard, Battery
B, 212th Coast Artillery on 1 May 1937. He was discharged from
Company K, 9th Regiment on 10 June 1943 in order to enter the armed
Forces, i.e. active duty, US Army.
In actual fact this record was late in reporting this discharge as
Carl had already been inducted into the Army at Camp Upton, Yaphank, NY;
on 9 May 1944.
On 23 April 1945, Pvt Shainowski was transferred from the 51st
Reinforcement Battalion to Company F, 508th PIR.
He was discharged on 26 January 1946.
Undoubtedly having been plagued with misspellings of his surname
during his service period, he petitioner the court to permit adoption of
the surname "Shain" which would not only include himself but also his
wife and their four daughters.
That change was made official and, as the court ordered, the outcome
was to be published in a local newspaper. The full proceedings can
be viewed, at right./
