Nestor Shurgot, born in Jablonica*, Poland
immigrated at age 3 with his mother Helena aboard the SS Oscar II. The
ship departed from Copenhagen, Denmark on 14 Dec 1928 and arrived in New
York Harbor 13 days later. The pair was traveling to be with their
husband/father, Haryton Szurgot who had .
The family was settled into the town of
Wilmerding in western Pennsylvania's Allegheny county. By the time of
the federal census taken in April 1930, a second son, Walter, had been born
just five months earlier. The parents were by then known as Harry and Helen
Shurgot.
Nestor enlisted in the Army at Pittsburgh,
PA on 4 January 1944 and went through basic training and jump school before
being shipped to an 82nd airborne replacement depot in England. On 3
October 1944 he was transferred to Serice Company, 508th PIR and then to
Company D two months later.
Pvt Shurgot was awarded the Combat
Infantry badge for action during the Ardennes campaign, 18 December 1944 to
20 February 1945,
Pfc
Shurgot returned to the USA joined with the 504th PIR, probably as a matter
of convenience to get a berth aboard the Queen Mary. The ship
sailed from Southampton, England and arrived in New York City harbor on 3
January 1946.
Nestor died in San Antonio, TX on 13
September, 2006 and is buried in the Haven of Memories Cemetery, Canton (Van
Zandt county), TX.
As evidenced by the inscription, he chose to change military
branches after the US Air Force was created in September 1947.
*There are three localities in Poland
named Jablonica, at this time which of the three were originally home to
