Grave marker for Richard E. Sims in Pleasant Plains
Cemetery, Danville (Twiggs and Wilkinson counties), Georgia.
Richard
registered for the draft ca. 1940 reporting his birth in Union
county, NC with a current address in Waxhaw in that same county.
He was employed by a farmer which was probably his father, W. J.
Sims, who was named as his point of contact. Based on census
records, W. J. Sims full name was Willie Jackson Sims
Richard enlisted in the Army at Ft Bragg, NC on 21
July 1944. The date of his arrival in the 508th is not
available in current records. It is possible that he was one of many
men transferred to the 508th in late 1945.
His
name appeared on a list of Co E men sailing on the Queen Mary from
Southampton to NYC. This record shows him and at least one other
Company E man on the manifest of that ship but with the 606th PIR.
He may have been joined with that regiment for the purpose of travel
ro the U.S.
