WILBUR E. SMITH

Grave marker for Wilbur E. Smith in Greenlawn Cemetery, Frankfort (Clinton county), Indiana.

Wilbur enlisted in the Army at Fort Benjamin Harrison, IN on 25 March 1943.

On 26 September 1944, Pvt Smith was transferred from Hq 82d AB Division Leicester, England to Service Company, 508th PIR.  He was subsequently transferred to Hq Hq on 24 November 1944.

Pvt Smith was appointed to the grade of Pfc on 4 January 1945.

On 26 January 1945 Pfc Smith was evacuated to a field hospital and classified as a non-battle casualty.  On 26 April 1945, after lengthy hospitalization, he was transferred to the hospital's Detachment of Patients and did not return to the regiment.

His military decorations include the Combat Infantryman Badge awarded for action during campaign, 18 Dec 1944 to 20 Feb 1945

Wilbur E. Smith died on 24 Jun 1968 of an Acute myocardial infarction while a patient in the Clinton County hospital, Frankfort, IN.

He had been employed as a printer for a newspaper.
