WILLIE E. SMITH

Grave marker for Willie E. Smith in Riverside Cemetery, Hazard (Perry county), Kentucky.

Willie enlisted in the Army at Peoria, IL on 1 January 1943 and became a member of Company A, 508th.

Pvt Smith participated in the jump into Normandy on D-Day.  He was wounded in action on 15 June 1944 and returned to duty three days later.  He was promoted to Pfc on 21 June 1944.

He was unable to join the assault into Holland due to being hospitalized but did go into the fray in Belgium. 

Pfc Smith was awarded the Bronze Service Arrowhead device for his  participation in the Normandy assault.
