ALEXANDER SOPKA
ALEXANDER SOPKA

   Age 93, of Pine Twp., on March 19, 2017. Husband of Ellen W. Father of Lisa. Son of the late Horton and Victoria Sopka. Brother of the late William Sopka. Mr. Sopka was a WW II Army Veteran with the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment 82nd Air Borne Division. He also loved woodworking and golf. Visitation Wed. 1 until the time of service at 3 p.m. at Neely Funeral Home, 2208 Mt. Royal Blvd.

Alexander registered for the draft ca. 1942 and enlisted in the Army at  enlisted at Pittsburgh, PA on 16 March 1943.

On 29 September 1944, Pvt Sopka was transferred from 82nd Airborne Division to Service Company, 508th PIR.  He was subsequently transferred to Company B on 28 October 1944.

Pvt Sopka was wounded in action on Christmas day, 1944 and evacuated.  Hew returned to the company on 1 February 1945.

He was discharged on 4 January 1946 at the  Indiantown Gap Military Reservation, PA.

 

On 28 January 1950, Alexander submitted this application for the Pennsylvania WWII Veterans Bonus.  He was credited with 18 months of domestic duty and 16 months of foreign service yield a $420 bonus award.
