BERNARD A. SPLETZER

[courtesy of Johnny Watkins]

Grave marker for Bernard A. Spletzer in Greenlawn Cemetery, Jacksonville (Duval county). Florida.

Bernard joined the Army on 16 December 1939, possibly in his native Minnesota.

On 24 February 1945 Pvt Spletzer was listed as a battle casualty when he was transferred from the hospital to Service Company, 508th PIR.  The dates of his arrival in the regiment as well as when he was wounded are unknown.

Pvt Spletzer was transferred to Company C from Service Company as soon as he returned.

Bernard returned to the U./S. under Movement Order 2024-20 aboard the SS Monticello.  The group was bound for the Reception Center at Camp Haan near Riverside, CA

His military decorations include the Bronze Service Arrowhead device awarded for the Southern France Campaign and Airborne Operations.

It is interesting to note that he apparently switched services after WWII as his grave marker shows him as a US Navy vet with rank of PR2 [Parachute Rigger, 2nd Class]
