INDUCTEES GO TO FORT SNELLING THURSDAY
The 7 inductees pictured here left early
Thursday morning on the 2:50 bus for Fort Snelling, Minn., to be inducted
into the armed forces. They were sent by selective service board No. 2.
Shown from left to right starting in the back row are Junior L. Spurgeon,
Howard A. O'Leary, Jr., and Robert E. Johnson. In the front row are Sherman
L. Zea, Howard L. Rowley (transferred in from Story county) William H.
Rickoff and Donald V. Carney. Shown with the colors are L. T. "Pete" Bowen
and Howard O'Leary, Sr., on hand as representatives of the Citizen's Victory
committee to give the boys a send off with gift packages and the best wishes
of the committee. Mr. O'Leary was in-a double role as his son was one of the

SPURGEON, Jay L. born on May 31, 1927 in Mason City, passed
away at age 91 on June 7, 2018 in Tucson. Dad was married for 53 years to
our beautiful mother, the late Betty Spurgeon...the love of his life, and is
survived by his daughter, Stacia Ringer; son, Jay L. Spurgeon II; seven
grandkids and three great-grandkids. Dad served with the 508th parachute
regiment, 82nd airborne, belonged to Phi Kappa Psi at Iowa State Univ. ’52.
A member of Dove of Peace, he served on the church council and was a choir
member for over 40 years. He was a board member of Tucson Chamber of
Commerce and the President of the Arizona Broadcasters Assn. Dad was
well-known for his beautiful baritone voice which helped him win our
mother’s heart and was enjoyed by all. A Celebration of his life will be
held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Dove of Peace
