Grave marker for Chester A. Standley in Plot DA-3-L7-5E of
the Woodlawn Cemetery, Claremore (Rogers county), Oklahoma.
John enlisted in the Army at Ft Leavenworth, Kansas on 16
October 1943.
After completion of jump school he was sent overseas to
England. On 10 August 1944 Pvt Standley was transferred from the 11th
Replacement Depot to Company B, 508th as the regiment was rebuilding due to
Normandy losses.
He participated in the Holland jump on 17 September 1944 and
was listed as MIA two days later. In fact, he had been wounded and
evacuated to a field hospital. After three months of
hospitalization he was deemed fit to travel and he sent back to the U.S. for
further treatment. He spent the next year recovering and was
discharged on 21 December 1946.
Chester was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Service
Arrowhead device for the Holland campaign and Airborne operations and the
Combat Infantryman Badge. |
