Richard
E. Stedman was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity at Iowa
State University in 1942 and 1943. Today the frat is described
as "... a fraternity that prides itself on the development of
leadership abilities in young men, and is known for being "The
Leadership Fraternity."
In the early years of
WWII, however, the frat had a military bent with an ROTC program ...
leadership of a different sort necessitated by the times. The
inscription in the photo at right reads: "FOR
THEE THEY DIED, MASTER AND MAKER - GOD OF RIGHT; THE SOLDIER DEAD
ARE AT THY GATE; WHO KEPT THE SPEARS OF HONOR BRIGHT; AND FREEDOM'S
HOUSE INVIOLATE - Drinkwater "
Stedman was drafted
while still a sophomore and was unable to take whatever leadership
skills he may have acquired very far. With only two years of
college e did not qualify for a commission and served as a Private
First Class in the 508th's Regimental Headquarters company.
