Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington (Arlington, Virginia.
Allan enlisted in the Navy in
December 1942 but was medically discharged five months later.
Determined to serve, Allan enlisted at New York City, NY
on 19 August
1943 and was
assigned to the 63rd Division, Field Artillery.
He volunteered for parachutist duty in January 1944 and after
completing jump school he sailed for Europe in May 1944.
On 29 September 1944 he was transferred to
Service Company, 508th. In October
1944 he was transferred to Co F and went into
Holland as a replacement.
He was also in the Battle of the Bulge and
was wounded on 25 December 1944. He was reloading a bazooka when he
said, "I thought someone had hit me in the face. When my ear started
bleeding, I realized that I had been hit by shrapnel." A second
wound in February 1945 resulted in a Purple Heart Oak Leaf Cluster.
He was evacuated to Paris General Hospital.
The wounds resulted in complete loss of hearing in his left ear and weak
hearing in the right ear. |
NEWPORT NEWS - Allan Howard Stein passed away on Wednesday,
Oct. 26, at the age of 86.
A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., he made Newport News his home for the past 27
years. After serving in the 82nd Airborne Division during WWII, he worked
for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and later for the Department of
Defense (DoD) serving as a Education Service Officer in Stuttgart, Germany.
In 1987 he retired from the DoD out of Fort Eustis, Va., Army Training
Support Center and continued to work for the Newport News Virginia Parks and
Recreation.
He held degrees in Art and Master's Degrees in Education and
Psychology. He was also an avid stamp collector/dealer, artist, and author
of two books, 'The Devil Within' and 'The Goniff'. He was a kind and
creative genius who inspired all who came in contact with him. His sense of
humor will always be remembered, his love never forgotten.
He is a multiple
recipient of the Purple Heart during combat and Bronze Star Medal for
valorous acts during WWII. He was a member of the Order of the Purple Heart,
American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Jewish War Veterans, and
Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Jenny Cohan; stepfather, Frank Cohan;
his father, Joseph Stein; and sister, Florence Newman.
Allan is survived by his wife of 51 wonderful years, Phyllis Stein;
children, Robert Stein and his wife, Patricia, Cynthia Stein and husband,
Troy Rader, Susan Stein-Lippman and husband, Andrew, Louis Morrison and
wife, Elishiva, Paula Shevitz and her husband, Edward; two grandchildren,
Jason Rader and Lila Lippman.
He will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9,
2011. The family request that donations be made in his honor to the American
Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association . Peninsula Funeral
