Hiram C. Stevens was born on 4 December 1915 in Bath, Maine.
He was somewhat older than the average recruit when he enlisted at the age
of 26 on 11 August 1942 in at Portland, ME.
Nonetheless, he was probably in excellent physical condition having been
raised on a farm and then working as a plumber.
Hiram
was captured in Holland and held as a POW for the remainder of the war.
He was liberated on 22 April 1945 (POW camp undetermined) and quickly
processed through military channels. On 12 June 1945
Sgt Stevens arrived in New York City Harbor aboard the USS Admiral W. S.
Benson (see bottom line, No. 17). |
