Eric Stott was born in Milnrow (Rochdale
borough, Lancashire), England. On 18 January 1930 he, along with his
parents and sister, boarded the SS Samaria in Liverpool (exhibit 1).
The family disembarked in New York city,
NY and presented immigration visas. They listed family in England as
emergency contacts but, more importantly, the name and address of Eric's
uncle in San Francisco, their final destination.
On 27 November 1942, although not yet a
U.S. citizen, Eric enlisted in the Army at San Francisco, California.
He was assigned to Hq Copany, 3rd Battalion, 508th PIR.
It is ironic that once the regiment
arrived in Nottingham Eric was less than 60 miles from his boyhood home in
Rochdale, near Manchester.
Pfc Stott participated in he jump into
Normandy on D-Day, 6 June 1944. He was wounded in the right shoulder on 3
July 1944.
On 24 February 1947 Eric became a
naturalized citizen (exhibit 3). He remained in California and died in
Stanislaus county on 5 September 1982. |
