VERNON R. STOVER

KILLEEN — Services for Vernon R. Stover, 81, of Belton will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Killeen with Capt (Chaplain) Dasha Samaratan officiating.
Burial will be in Killeen City Cemetery with military honors.
He died Thursday, Aug. 24, in a Temple hospital.
   Mr. Stover was born and educated in Santo. He joined the U.S. Army in 1943 and retired in 1988, serving in World War II and Korea. His awards include Purple Heart Medal, Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, World War II Victory Medal, German Occupation Medal. European-African-Mediterranean Medal with Bronze Service Arrowhead and three Service Stars, Combat Infantry Badge, Parachute Badge. Expert Rifle Badge and Belgium Fourragére. He worked for FedEx and B&G Auto Supply in Killeen. He was a member of DAV Chapter 37 and Military Officers Association of America.
His first wife, Verdia, preceded him in death.
   Survivors are his wife, Mildred Stover of Belton; a son, James R. Stover of Little River; a daughter. Carolyn Reed of Killeen; a stepson. Michael Snelgrove of Tallahassee, Fla; two step-daughters, Wanda Collins of Colorado Springs. Colo., and Rita Cunningham of Miles City, Mont., two brothers. Harvey Hardy of Guthrie, Okla., and James K Stover of Santo; a sister, Maxine Hoffman of Ponca City, Okla.; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
   Visitation is 8-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to American Heart Association.

Pvt Stover was transferred to Company E, 508th from the 11th Replacement Depot on 10 August 1944. He was promoted to Pfc less than 2 months later.

He parachuted into Nijmegen, Holland on 17 Sept, 1944 and was late awarded the Bronze star Arrowhead device for the Holland campaign and Airborne operations.

Pfc Stover was wounded in action on 31 January 1945 in Belgium and was evacuated to a field hospital.  He rejoined the unit on 18 March 1945.
