Harry J. Street was just 5 years old on September 3,
1924 when he and his mother Hannah immigrated to the U.S.
They crossed the border at Port Huron, Michigan
traveling from Port William, Ontario, Canada to Cleveland, Ohio
where they would join his father, Oliver Street. They were
classified as "non-quota immigrants" arriving for permanent
residency.
Harry's nationality was documented as Canadian and
his race was stated to be Irish. That may be due
to his mother's nationality as the 1930 Census lists her as being
from South Ireland. His father, however, was native to Canada.
The 1930 U.S. census shows the family (father listed as "Oniva"
residing in Cleveland, OH which was the destination stated when they
entered the U.S.
On January 12, 1943, although still not a U.S. citizen, Harry
enlisted in the U.S. Army and volunteered for parachutist duty.
He completed jump school, probably at Fort Benning, GA, and was
assigned to Company C of the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment. The
regiment at that time was stationed at Camp Mackall, NC for advanced
field training before shipping out to Europe.
Harry, by then a Corporal, was with the regiment when it jumped into
Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944.
Harry Street died on Mar. 19, 1988 in Plot: 20B,
87A of he Monterey, CA. He was interred in the Riverside
National Cemetery, Riverside (Riverside County), California.
