Norman enlisted in the Army at Cincinnati, OH on 29 Oct
1943. As a parachutist volunteer he was assigned to the Headquarters
Company, 3rd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment. He
jumped into the Nijmegen, Holland area on 17 September 1944 during
Operation Market and was awarded the Bronze Service Arrowhead device for his
participation in the Holland campaign and Airborne operations. He may
have also fought during the Battle of The Bulge campaign.
Following
the war the 508th served as the Honor Guard for General Eisenhower at
SHAEF HQ in Frankfurt. During this time the men awaited the moment
when they had enough points to be sent home. Norman's moment came
in late December 1945 when he boarded the Queen Mary in Southampton,
England. The ship arrived in New York City on 3 January 1946. He
was discharged less than two weeks later.
Tragically, although details are not yet known, Norman
was murdered outside his Miamisburg, Ohio home in the early morning of
26 February 1976.
He was taken to the Kettering Medical Center, Kettering
(Montgomery), Ohio where he was pronounced dead. |
