GEORGE W. SUMMERALL

(courtesy of Donna McPherson)

Application For A Grave Marker and resulting stone for George W. Summerall in Owens Cemetery, Arcadia (DeSoto county), Florida.

George enlisted in the Army at Camp Blanding, FL and as a parachutist volunteer was assigned to the 507th PIR.

On16 October 1942 Pvt Summerall was amongst those men transferred from the 507th as cadre to the newly activated 508th PIR.

Pvt Summerall was transferred to the Parachute School at Ft. Benning on 8 April 1943 and apparently found his way back to the 507th as his grave marker states that he was a Sergeant in that unit.

The application for his grave marker recorded George's discharge date as 23 September 1945.  Sadly also shows his date of death as being just three months later on Christmas Eve.  While the cause of death is unknown it may have been due to a traffic accident.
