HARVEY S. SUTHERLAND
MERRIMACK -- Harvey Stevens Sutherland, 84, died July 26, 2009, at home after a brief illness. Born in Lynnfield, Mass., on Dec. 16, 1924, he was the son of C. Harvey and Pauline Sutherland. Mr. Sutherland was educated in the Lynn, Mass., school system.

He joined the U.S. Army at 18. He fought with the 509th Parachute Infantry in the 82nd Airborne Division in Anzio beachhead and Rome-Arno, Italy; St. Tropez, southern France (airborne assault); Manhay and St. Vith, Belgium; Sadzot, Belgium; Ardennes-Alsace; and the Rhineland, Germany. Mr. Sutherland was awarded the European Theater of Operations ribbon with 5 campaign stars, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, Combat Infantryman Badge, Master Parachutist Silver Wings, Presidential Unit Citation with Oak Leaf Cluster, European Middle-Eastern service medal, French Third Zouves Regimental Badge, WWII Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), Overseas Combat Service Medal, French Croix de Guerre with Silver Star, Government of France "Special Citation", Belgium Croix de Guerre, Netherland Orange Lanyard and Battle of the Bulge.

He was named "Man of the Year" for the Airborne in 1993. He was also honored with his name on the Purple Heart Trail in New Hampshire Mr. Sutherland was a life member of the Amity Lodge 5863, AF&AM, Danvers, Mass.; an affiliate member of Rising Sun Lodge 39, Nashua; a member of the Scottish Rite (32nd degree Freemason), Valley of Nashua; Bektash Temple Shrine; and International Legion of Honor, Concord.

In addition, he was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 19; a member and trustee of VFW Post 8641 of Merrimack; Military Order of the Purple Heart, Chapter 395 of New Hampshire; Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge; and the 509th Parachute Infantry Association. He was past commander of VFW Post 9548 and Augustus P. Gardner Post 227, The American Legion, both in Middleton, Mass.

He was past chairman of the Merrimack Valley Section of the American Society for Quality Control. He was also a faculty member and adjunct professor of Reliability Engineering and Quality Assurance Process Control with the NH Technical College. Before retirement in 1988, he was at Calcomp and Lockheed Sanders of Nashua for 24 years as a senior procurement quality assurance engineer and member of the "Apollo 11" Quality Reliability Lunar Mission for NASA.

Family members include his wife of 63 years, Dawn P. Sutherland; three sons, Mark, Scott, and Kevin Sutherland; a daughter, Vicki Lyn Fuller; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Herbert Sutherland; and nieces and nephews.

SERVICES: Calling hours are Tuesday from 2 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. in George R. Rivet Funeral Home, 425 Daniel Webster Highway, Merrimack. A graveside service with military honors will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Oakdale Cemetery, Middleton, Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a military or Masonic charity, or to a charity of one's choice.

Grave markers for Harvey S. Sutherland in the Oakdale Cemetery, Middleton (Essex county), Massachusetts.

Harvey enlisted in the Army at Boston, MA on 24 May 1943 and was assigned to the 509th Parachute Infantry Battalion.

On 25 February 1945 Pvt Sutherland was transferred from the 509th PIB to Co E, 508th PIR.

Pvt Sutherland was discharged on 20 November 1945.
