RICHARD F. SZRAMA |
Richard F. Szrama, 76, a longtime snowplow operator for
the New York State Thruway Authority, died Thursday (Jan. 17, 2002) in
St. Joseph Hospital, Cheektowaga, after a brief illness.
A lifelong resident of Buffalo, Szrama cleared snow for 30 years,
retiring in 1990. His daughter, Susan Fechter of Lancaster, recalls that
during the Blizzard of '77, he didn't return home from work for days,
until the worst of the storm was over.
An Army veteran of World War II, Szrama served with the 82nd Airborne
Division in Germany. He was a member of the Leonard Post Jr. Post 6251,
Veterans of Foreign Wars, in Cheektowaga. He was a Buffalo sports fan
and gardener, and was known to his family as a fastidious coupon-clipper
who could scout out the best deals on every product imaginable.
In addition to his daughter, he is survived by his wife, the former
Dorothy Smith; a son, Gary R. of Phoenix; three brothers, Joseph and
Leonard, both of Cheektowaga, and Robert of Fort Myers, Fla.; and a
grandchild.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Monday in John the
Baptist Church on Sandridge Road in Alden.
