RAYMOND E. THORNBURGH

   Mr. Raymond Edgar Thornburgh, 91, of Dunkirk, died Monday morning, February 9th, 2015 at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. He was born March 23rd, 1923 in Upland, IainN and was the son of the late Arthur Douglas & Emma Magdeline (Steinhilber) Thornburgh.
   Raymond proudly and honorably served his country during WWII in the United States Army. He served as a paratrooper with 508th Infantry, while stationed in Germany he was an honor guard for General Eisenhower.
   Raymond had been employed as a truck driver with Ellis Trucking and Craig Trucking. He owned and operated Thornburgh Truck Leasing. Raymond was also a well-known farmer. He enjoyed playing cards, golfing, and discussing politics. Raymond had been a member of the American Legion in Albany.
   Raymond is survived by his six children; Bruce Douglas Thornburgh (Becky), Kimber Malone Dixon, Diana Rae Thornburgh, Raylene Thornburgh McCreery (Terry, Rhonda Lisa Jarnagin-Thorpe, and Valerie Ann Thornburgh-Dentel (Shawn); thirteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; a brother Cledith Aladdin Thornburgh; several nieces and nephews.
   In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Minnie Frances Ethel (Wheat) Thornburgh; his second wife Mary Lou (Reading) Thornburgh; five brothers and two sisters also preceded him in death.
   Funeral Services for Raymond will be held at Garden View Funeral Home with Pastor John Martin officiating. Burial with Military Honors being conducted by the United States Army and the Delaware County Honor Guard will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery.

Raymond registered for the draft in Marion, IN on 30 June 1942 and was inducted into the army at Indianapolis, IN on 9 February 1943.

Pfc Thornburg was transferred from the 3rd Replacement Depot to Company I, 508th PIR on 15 February 1945.

His military decorations include the Combat Infantryman Badge awarded for action during Normandy, France Campaign, 6 June 1944 to 9 July 1944 and the Good Conduct Medal.

He married Janet B. Swingley in Muncie, IN on 9 August 1955 after the tragically early death of his first wife, Frances, in 1962.  After surviving Frances for 53 years, he was laid to rest alongside her.

Unfortunately, Janet also died in her early thirties.
