NORMAN E. TIPTON

 

Grave markers for Norman E. Tipton in Oakwood Cemetery, Hickory (Catawba county), North Carolina.

Norman attended the U.S. Military Academy at West :Point from 1 July 1927-10 June 1931 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. on 11 June 1931.

He was promoted to Captain on 9 September 1940 and to Lt. Colonel on 7 January 1943.  He attained the grade of Colonel on 7 September 1950.

On 18 January 1955, Col Tipton named commander of the 508th Airborne Regimental Combat Team, succeeding Colonel Glenn J. McGowan.  He remained in command until 1955 when the 508th was morphed into the 101st Airborne at Fort Campbell, KY.

He retired on 31 July 1961.
