WILLIAM J. TYREE

[courtesy of Gary Nault]

Grave marker for William J. Tyree in Sitka Memorial Park, Sitka (Sitka Borough), Alaska.

William registered for the draft in Spokane, WA on 16 October 1940 and was inducted into the Army at  Sacramento. CA on 25 September 1942.

Pvt Tyree was probably among the first entrants to H1 2nd, 508th PIR but the Morning Reports for that period are not available. He was declared a qualified parachutist on 5 March 1943.

The following month, however, he ended up in the guardhouse for two weeks for some reason.

On 11 May 1943 he was transferred to the Zone of Interior Replacement Depot, Shenango, PA where he would have been transferred to an infantry unit.

On 13 June 1950, he married Suzy Magorty in Juneau, AK.  She preceded him in death in 1986 and is buried in Sitka, AK, over 90 air miles from his burial site.
