SHERMAN C. VAN ENWYCK
Man Crushed By Tipped Shovel

ALFRED STATION, N. Y. (AP) A power shovel tipped over and crushed Sherman Van Enwyck to death Monday. Van Enwyck, 36, was co-owner of Claude J. Nevclizer Inc., of Williamson, Wayne County, where he lived.

The excavating contractors were digging a cable trench near this Allegany County community. A bulldozer was pulling the power shovel when it tipped over.

Grave marker for Sherman C. Van Enwyck in Plot 1A-366-5 of the Furnaceville Cemetery, (Wayne county), New York.

Sherman enlisted in the Army at Rochester, NY on 20 August 1942 and was assigned to Company A, 508th PIR.

Sgt Van Enwyck parachuted into Normandy on D-Day, 6 June 1944.  He was slightly wounded in action on 14 June and was able to rejoin his unit 5 days later.

He received the Silver Star as well as the Purple Heart and the Combat infantryman badge

On 26 May 1945 SSgt Van Enwyck was further recognized by being given a commission as a 2nd Lt.
